His eyes.
They really are like no other.
One minute,
They are flat, cold steel.
But then he looks at me
And they become
Shimmering pools
Of liquid mercury.
He needs me,
I can see it in those eyes.
He is afraid I will leave him,
Like all the others.
He can’t comprehend yet
That someone may actually love him,
That someone genuinely cares.
He’s been through so much,
So alone and isolated.
He will never admit he needs me,
But I don’t need a confession,
I know he does.
It is there in his eyes
When he looks at me,
When the flatness and cold
Disappear,
And I am left
With shimmering pools
Of silver.
And, who knows?
Maybe he can heal me, too.
